U21 Football City Final
Our u21 football side faced Tory Gaels, a combination of Crecora and Croom, in the city final on
aturday afternoon in Ballybrown. We were down a number of players for reasons of injury, illness
and work clashes, however the seventeen who were available to tog for this game pulled off a
memorable victory in the closing stages and brought home the first trophy of the season for the
senior club on a scoreline of 2-7 to 1-9.
We started strongly with a goal from Killian Ryan as the opening score of the game, Tory Gaels
replied with a goal of their own and the teams swapped points through the half to leave Mungret
leading 1-4 to 1-3 at half-time, with the points coming from Adrian Hanley and Sean Moran. Michael
Fitzgibbon had to go off early in the half with an injury and was replaced by Glen Hughes. Tory took a
grip on the game in the third quarter, scoring 5 points in a row from plentiful possession to lead by 4
points with 12 minutes left. Under pressure we had lost two defenders during this period, one to a
red card and another to a back card. Conor O’Brien had left the field with a knock after halftime but
returned to great effect as the black card replacement when he got a hand to a breaking ball in the
square to grab a goal and inspire a comeback. The players rose to the occasion with a further 3
points from Adrian Hanley and Conor Barry leaving us two ahead going into the final minute. Six
nervous minutes of additional time saw Tory get one point back as our boys held on for a wellcelebrated
win by the narrowest of margins.
The team lined out as David Lynch, Donal Brown, Luke O’Connell, Cathal Shinnors, Conor Barry,
Michael Fitzgibbon, David Brosnan, Nigel Kerr, Cian O’Doherty, Sean Moran, Eoin O’Doherty, Declan
Brown, Killian Ryan, Adrian Hanley, Conor O’Brien with Glen Hughes & Jack Sadlier the subs used.
Scorers were; Adrian Hanley 0-5, Killian Ryan 1-0, Conor O’Brien 1-0, Sean Moran 0-1, Conor Barry 0-
1. Adrian Hanley was team captain and accepted the cup after the game.
